I Didn’t Know I Was An Indigo…

…until just recently. Over a decade ago, I began trawling the internet in an attempt to finally nail down what kind of job was right for me. After a 4-year stint as a professional Medical Writer, I knew that conventional corporate jobs were not for me. In early 2007, I found the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, a career test based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). My results shouted “This is me!” over and over again. It still didn’t give me a good idea of what practical job I should do, though.

What I did learn is that I was an INFP – Introverted, iNtuitive, Feeler, Perceiver. This is one of the 16 Myers-Briggs types, and represents approximately 5% of the general population. In other words – rare. INFPs are driven by their internal value systems, morals and ideals. I decided to find out more. I first learned about introverts in a book entitled The Introvert Advantage by Marti Olsen-Laney. In this book, Olsen-Laney referenced Dr. Elaine Aron’s book The Highly Sensitive Person: How To Thrive When The World Overwhelms You. I subsequently read this seminal book and again saw myself more clearly than ever before. What an eye-opener! I never learned stuff like this in school.

Venn-IN-HSP-ADHD-INDIGO

Only recently, at the age of 49, was I diagnosed with ADHD. Another eureka moment. It was way too long a time coming, because I had suffered tremendously through my entire  life up until that point trying blindly to fit into the conventional world. Although the insight I got was healing and priceless, I knew I still had a long way to go before I could  actualize the person I was always meant to be.

As I progressed in my personal growth, I realized more and more that I thought very differently from most people and became increasingly frustrated at not being able to find like-minded people who would not only understand but appreciate me. Thanks to a wonderful duo and their wonderful website Lonerwolf.com, I started feeling much less alone (ironically). Aletheia Luna and Mateo Sol (Luna & Sol), the proprietors of this website, urge their readers to “LEAVE THE HERD. FIND YOUR PACK. CONNECT WITH YOUR SOUL.” The psychological, spiritual and shamanic insights that Luna and Sol write about have added greatly to my self-understanding. In fact, after reading a recent article on their website entitled “Are You An Indigo Child? These 17 Signs Will Reveal The Truth” I finally understood that I was indeed an Indigo soul. Indigo refers to the unique indigo color that features very prominently in the auras of these special people.

It took a very long time and a great deal of searching, learning, reading and writing in my journal to pull together IN[F/T][P/J]), HSP, ADHD and Indigo traits. Hence, the Venn diagram you see above. Each of these traits is often dealt with as separate from one another, which is a shame, because so much insight can be had by pulling the knowledge from each field together.

My main goal in life is to help fellow souls, who have some combination of these traits, to have a more rich, fulfilling and authentic life. By continuing to learn more about these topics and sharing what I’ve learned, I believe I am fulfilling my destiny, because it gives me immense gratification. I hope you’ve found your own insights by reading this post. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Blessings – Miriam
